Attendee comments:
"Joe and I really enjoyed the Heritage Turkey workshop this past weekend.  We feel much more prepared to get the most out of our first experience raising heritage turkeys and were very pleased with all of the great connections that we were able to make.  Thank you for providing excellent opportunities, such as this one, to help us grow our small farm business (and learn how to help valuable heritage animals).

"This was the best workshop I've attended. It was filled with nuts and bolts information."

The workshops will be taught Danny Williamson of Tampa, Kansas.  Danny breeds Standard Bred poultry for production and show. He currently maintains breeding flocks of 400 Black turkeys, 300 Plymouth Rock chickens, as well as Cornish, Dark Brahma chickens, and White call ducks. Danny is a general license judge for the American Poultry Association and has earned the title of Grand Master Breeder in Black turkeys, Standard Dark Brahma chickens, and White Call ducks. He serves on the Board of Directors and is employed as the General Manager and Chief Financial Officer of Good Shepherd Turkey Ranch, Inc. With his good friend and mentor Frank Reese, Danny is working to revive interest in and use of Standard Bred poultry by producing high quality market birds, judging and through public education.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) has been working to conserve endangered breeds of livestock and poultry since 1977. In 1997 ALBC began a significant conservation effort for Standard turkeys. In the intervening years, the breeding population of standard turkeys has increased from 1300 to nearly 10,500. Marjorie Bender, ALBC’s Research & Technical Program Director, has provided leadership throughout most of this project’s history. She will serve as workshop facilitator. ALBC continues to support the survival of the Standard turkeys through education, promotion, and on-going monitoring.
