First Grade Unit: EXPLAIN

Explain: THE RESTAURANT GAME

KEY CONCEPTS

• identify animals on the farm and describe their characteristics
• recognize and understand the basic needs of animals for air, water, food, shelter, and space.

SUMMARY

Students get into groups by species and decide what their animal will eat at the restaurant. They then submit their choices.

MATERIALS NEEDED

AnMenu.pdf (1 copy per species team), samples of foods from the farm.

DIRECTIONS

THE RESTAURANT GAME

1. Begin by playing Animal Families (detailed in the Kindergarten unit). In this game, the teacher assigns species randomly by handing out 3 or 4 cards of each species from the card set. Species find each other by sound, and a movement if they know one (such a waddling like a duck).

2. Once they have found each other, the students settle in and study their menu. Students discuss and agree on the foods they eat, then circle all of the possible food choices their animal would make.

3. The teacher presents the "Specials of the Day", possibly using the samples from the farm such as hay or grain, and asks the animals to make their sound if they are interested in that item.

4. For added effect, invite the students to make a sound that they are not interested, and present other options to the species present (one team at a time) such as acorns, bugs, kitchen scraps or curds and whey!

5. (Assessment) Species teams check that their names and species name are listed on the menus, and then hand them in with food choices circled.
