Kindergarten Unit: EXPAND

Expand: SLIDESHOW SUPPLEMENTAL SET 1, SLIDESHOW PARTS 2 AND 3.

KEY CONCEPTS

• explore the similarities and differences between humans and animals.

SUMMARY

Students view a slideshow to solidify their ability to recognize ten species of domestic farm animals. Discuss the importance of farm animals and why breeds become rare.

MATERIALS NEEDED

Projector, CD and script.

DIRECTIONS

1. Teacher leads a guided discussion as students view images of the ten different species of farm animals (SLIDESHOW SUPPLEMENTAL SET 1). Students are encouraged to comment on similarities and differences.

2. The conversation then expands to include discussion about the similarities and differences between people and animals. This conversation can begin during the field trip (perhaps over lunch as you discuss how we rely on animals for our food!) and continue throughout the unit.

3. Additionally, students can view SLIDESHOW PARTS 2 AND SLIDESHOW PARTS 3, and continue discussion, focusing on why breeds become rare.
