Kindergarten Unit: EXPLAIN

Explain: A LIVING VENN DIAGRAM: GUIDED DISCUSSION, SUPPLEMENTAL SLIDESHOW.

SUMMARY

Students are beginning to become familiar with the various species of farm animals and the products they provide. They are noticing similarities and differences among the animals. This kinesthetic and auditory whole-class "Living Venn Diagram" is designed engage new learning styles and reinforce previous work. Writing is not required as students stand and act out the Venn Diagram.

MATERIALS NEEDED

Overhead projector, student science notebooks.

DIRECTIONS

A LIVING VENN DIAGRAM

1. Ask two students come to the front and act like their favorite animal. Tell them they can talk to each other. Ask them to talk about what they have in common and what makes them different from each other. After a few observations, add another species. (Use the sample dialogue below as a guide. )

2. Participation by all students is possible as you compile a "compare and contrast" diagram. Use this opportunity to introduce vocabulary words for emerging readers. In the center, list what farm animals have in common, such as, "Farm animals move about on their own, unlike plants". On the outside edges, put differences such as: "Chickens have wings" on one side and "Horses walk on four legs" on the other.

 

SAMPLE DIALOGUE FOR LIVING VENN DIAGRAM:

TEACHER:
(HAVING CALLED UP TWO VOLUNTEERS
TO ACT LIKE THEIR FAVORITE ANIMAL)

HOW MANY LEGS DO YOU HAVE?

ACTOR CHICKEN: I HAVE TWO!

ACTOR HORSE: I HAVE FOUR!

TEACHER: WHAT SOUNDS DO YOU MAKE?

ACTOR CHICKEN: "I CLUCK!"

ACTOR HORSE: "I SAY PBBBBB AND NEIGH"

TEACHER:
(HAVING CALLED UP ANOTHER SET OF TWO VOLUNTEERS
OF TWO MORE SPECIES AND CONTINUES ASKING QUESTIONS SUCH AS)

WHAT DO YOU EAT?
HOW DO YOU CHANGE AS YOU GROW?
HOW DO YOU MOVE AROUND?
WHAT MAKES YOU RUN?
HOW DO YOU DEFEND YOURSELF?
HOW DO YOU EAT?
DO YOU HAVE TEETH? TOP AND BOTTOM?

Note: If there was no pig, or no one chose a pig, the teacher might ask for a ‘temporary pig', (even though it is not a student's favorite animal).

GUIDED DISCUSSION

1. When finished, talk about what you have learned about the similarities and differences among farm animals.

2. Transfer notes to the KWL chart and record any new questions which have arisen.

3. Record the name of the student putting forth the idea for assessment purposes. The Venn Diagram activity tests observation and synthesis skills.


ASSESSMENT. SUPPLEMENTAL SLIDESHOW SET #2: BREEDS

1. Now that students have looked at many species of farm animals, it is time to challenge them to look for similarities and differences within one species. Just how much subtlety can they distinguish?

2. In this exercise, they will be looking for similarities and differences in the species of the goose. Using Supplemental Slideset 2, show a variety of breeds of geese.

3. Go through the images and have students volunteer what they notice. Immediately go through the slides again and ask them to point out both similarities and differences from image to image.

4. This exercise can be also be used as an assessment in a small group setting or one-on-one.

RESOURCES

Extraordinary Chickens, by Steven Green-Armytage, Harry N Abrams (2003). ISBN: 0810991292 . This wonderful book depicts in large image format the incredible variety that exists within one species (the chicken). The large, beautiful photographs lend themselves to group discussion, drawing, and practicing early reading skills (such as learning the parts of the book).
